Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was found not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
