European Parliament Vote to Ban Meat-Related Terms for Vegetarian Foods

In a significant vote this week, MEPs decided 355 to 247 to restrict product terms such as "steak" and "sausage" solely for meat products.

What the Decision Signifies

If this proposal becomes law, popular vegetarian items like veggie burgers, soy steak, and vegetable schnitzel may need to be renamed across European Union markets.

Nevertheless, before the restriction to take effect, it must gain support from most of the EU's 27 member states, which is uncertain.

The Debate Surrounding the Proposal

Supporters contend that consumers need clear information and while traditional names should exclusively refer to items from livestock.

"A steak and sausages are goods from our livestock: not synthetic production or plant products," said France's MEP Céline Imart.

Opponents, led by Green MEPs, called the move political tactics.

"Plant-based burgers, wheat schnitzel and soy sausage do not confuse shoppers, just rightwing politicians," said Austria's Green MEP Thomas Waitz.

Past Attempts and Judicial Context

The marks another attempt to regulate these names. The European parliament voted down a similar prohibition in four years ago.

France earlier enacted a domestic restriction on meat terms for plant-based foods in recent years, but EU courts determined it illegal under European legislation in this year.

Industry and Consumer Response

Leading German retailers such as Aldi and Lidl oppose the proposal, warning that altering established terms would confuse consumers.

Advocacy organizations point to surveys indicating that most shoppers understand these names when products are clearly identified as vegan.

"Nearly seventy percent of shoppers recognize these names as long as items are explicitly marked plant-based," said Irina Popescu, a food policy officer at BEUC.

What Following the Vote

This legislative measure next requires review by European governments, where it needs to obtain broad approval to become law.

Considering the divided views among both politicians and the general population, the future of this initiative remains uncertain.
