Exploring a Bizarre Steam Game Trial: Guiding a Turdy Character with the Goal to Arrive at the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have encountered plenty of interesting creations from small studios. Yet, one catches the eye for its offbeat concept. Called Unko Technica, this classic-feel platformer includes a protagonist that is actually a piece of poop striving to navigate to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
Player controls is simple: just use a single jump button. Throughout 150 levels, battle mini-bosses and visit a shop to buy outfits for your fecal avatar.
Plan your jumps carefully, since one error requires restarting the level. Bounce off bubbles to launch yourself higher, traverse fragile ledges, and activate buttons to open hidden paths. Earn UN-KOINS and use them on more difficult stages in which the action ramps up.
Graphically, the experience features vibrant stages and catchy music score. The simple graphics of moving abstract forms could recall players of classic titles like Earthbound.
Even though tough to think of other games where you play as a piece of feces, video games frequently incorporated scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, you can create grenades from protagonist droppings. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use manure as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, fecal references shows up extensively in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its humorous premise, Unko Technica has already garnered significant accolades, such as taking top honors at Bandai Namco's indie contest in 2023. A playable preview is ready at present on Steam, with the full game scheduled to debut on PC in the fall.
