Wonder Man Trailer Unveils Marvel's Most Meta Series To Date
The Marvel studio has heard that audiences could be feeling some superhero fatigue, so they've decided to incorporate this exact idea into their next superhero show.
That's right, the debut trailer for Wonder Man has arrived, and it promises a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The preview, which debuted on Oct. 10, also subtly moved the Wonder Man release date later from its initial end of 2025 window into January 2026.
Why another superhero film? Everyone is weary of superheroes. Why watch them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a profound level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the whole genre of narrative.
The reporter responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"
The trailer then transitions to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the interview on his phone, and the trailer concludes.
Key Details Regarding Wonder Man
We already knew that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show stars Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a super-powered being (Wonder Man).
The supporting cast includes Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.
The Studio's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is fully committed on meta-humor. Will that work without the celebrity appeal of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? Only time will tell.
